This week’s question…

This week I want to know if you have ever read books by any of the following authors:

  • Danielle Steele
  • Harlan Coben
  • James Patterson
  • Nora Roberts
  • John Grisham
  • David Baldacci

Rae says she picked these authors is because she’s been seeing their names her whole life – They’re the sort of names that pop up when a store doesn’t necessarily sell books but they have some. She was also keen to know if they’re popular outside the US – so here’s a UK point of view.

Click the author’s name to go to their Goodreads page

Danielle Steele

I’ve definitely heard of Danielle Steele but I don’t think I’ve ever read anything written by her – at least I don’t recall it. She’s certainly a prolific author and I’ve definately seen her books in shops all over the place, but I’ve never really had the urge to pick one up they just never seemed like my type of book but maybe I’m missing out!

Harlan Coben

I’d not heard of Harlan Coben before starting this post but it sounds like he writes the sorts of stories I enjoy and he seems to have some fairly solid Goodreads ratings so maybe I’ll give him a go

James Patterson

I’m not sure there are many people who haven’t heard of James Patterson – I think he’s probably the king of the Airport Book Buy. My first exposure to James Patterson actually came through film rather than his books directly – I watched Along Came A Spider and Kiss The Girls starring Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, when I discovered they were based on books I picked a few up. I’ve also read some of the Women’s Murder Club series but overall I’ve barely made a dent in reading his back catalogue – Although I do often question how many he actually writes and how many have his name added to maximise sales when he’s actually had minimal input, an awful lot of them seem to have a co-author. Still not bad for a summer read by the pool

Nora Roberts

I’ve not read anything she writes under this name, they tend to be contemporary romances that don’t immediately grab my attention – however she also writes as J.D. Robb, I’ve not read these either but they are crime fiction and have been on my radar as a potential series to read – however there are currently over 40 books in the series and I don’t think she’s done yet so it’s a little like thinking about climbing Everest!

John Grisham

My grandma nearly always had a John Grisham on loan from the library! I was a little young to appreciate them at the time but I do enjoy a good legal thriller so again it’s a back catalogue I would like to make a dent in at some point! I’ve also watched The Pelican Brief and Runaway Jury which are both based on books written by him.

David Baldacci

This is another author I keep thinking about picking up – Like James Patterson I think these are probably perfect poolside books but I’ve not read one yet. I did however kinda enjoy the short-lived summer show King & Maxwell so maybe that series would be a good place for me to start reading his books…

Have you read books by any of these authors? Let me know in the comments or join in the conversation on Rae’s post!

  1. Awesome post Sarah, thanks for confirming their popularity in the UK! You read crime fiction right? I think you would like Harlan Coben. I’ve only read one of his books so far (Fool Me Once) but I just bought two more at a sale, I’m excited to get to them

    1. I do! I’ll have to keep my eye out for one, it looks like my local Waterstones stock some of his books but definitely the least well known of the 6 on this side of the pond (in my experience at least)

Great post! I can definitely confirm these are popular outside of the US as well; I remember seeing them everywhere when I was still living in Holland. And you’re right, Patterson is probably the nr 1 airport buy and they are without doubt entertaining, although like you I doubt he actually has a lot of imput in all of them. I’ve read at least one or two books by most of them (not Danielle Steele or Harlan Coben though, although the second is on my wishlist). John Grisham is probably my favorite of the bunch; his legal thrillers are always entertaining to read.

  3. Love Coben and Grisham. I’ve only read one Baldacci which I thoroughly enjoyed and keep meaning to read more. Wasn’t too impressed with the only James Patterson I’ve tried so have never gone back. And haven’t read the other two at all – they’ve never really appealed. But certainly they’re all big names over here.
