Next Month We’re Loving… La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One

It’s time for another Next Month We’re Loving…, guest post! Today’s post comes from Charlotte over at Charlotte, Somewhere and she’s talking about an October release I’m equally excited about!

La Belle Sauvage I remember being gifted Northern Lights my my great, great aunt. For someone who has no children and didn’t read children’s books, she has incredible taste. She is the person who was later responsible for introducing Harry Potter to our home, by way of a joint gift to my sister and me, causing many arguments about whose book it was really. I digress.

I loved Northern Lights from the start. I devoured it, adored it and got the sequel, The Subtle Knife, pretty soon after. Then I had to wait two whole years for The Amber Spyglassto complete the trilogy. It was a LONG wait, and the first book I’d ever really anticipated. I had to wait to be given it as a Christmas gift, and then to eat dinner and open other gifts before I was allowed to read it : THE OUTRAGE. I read them over and over again.

It’s no exaggeration to say that His Dark Materials were THE books of my childhood.

When I discovered that there was going to be another book in this world: La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One, I squealed aloud. Not just a new book, but the promise of several. I have never wanted a book as badly as I want this one.

We don’t know a great deal about La Belle Sauvage, but I want to go in surprised, so this suits me. I want to experience the excitement I had with The Amber Spyglass, knowing the world, but almost nothing about the story; something that is near impossible in these days of internet reviews. I know Lyra is at the centre of the story (which is neither prequel nor sequel, but rather, a story that runs alongside His Dark Materials) and, as she’s my favourite female protagonist, that’s all I need.

We do have a synopsis (for those of you who need to know more):  “Eleven-year-old Malcolm Polstead and his dæmon, Asta, live with his parents at the Trout Inn near Oxford. Across the River Thames (which Malcolm navigates often using his beloved canoe, a boat by the name of La Belle Sauvage) is the Godstow Priory where the nuns live. Malcolm learns they have a guest with them, a baby by the name of Lyra Belacqua”

I have pre-ordered a signed, limited edition; I am that certain of my love for this book. I have all the anticipation I had that Christmas Eve as I waited to get my hands on The Amber Spyglass. It is a magical feeling.

I. Cannot. Wait.

La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One is published in the UK by David Fickling Books on 19th October

Thanks to Charlotte for guesting on the blog! She’s not the only one with a special edition on order! Look at it, it’s beautiful!

      1. I was put after the film, which I saw in cinema and thought was rubbish. That’s also the reason I took so long to fall in love with Harry Potter, which I do now adore, so I probably should give His Dark Materials a go! X

        1. I don’t think anyone liked the film! It’s horrible in comparison to the books!
