Today while clearing my backlog of reviews I’m bringing you my thoughts on Dream Job, The Book Of The Year, Lies and Need To Know.

I tend to enjoy books in the same vein as Hotel Babylon so I requested this expecting it to be some sort of amusing collection of anonymised anecdotes, instead I’m not really sure what I got but it wasn’t really for me.

Other people have rated it highly though so it clearly works for some people

I absolutely love the No Such Thing As A Fish podcast, it’s a podcast from the QI Elves, the researchers behind the hit show. While the podcast features each person sharing their favourite facts from the week this book is an A-Z look at some of the weirder facts and news stories from 2017. This is a wonderful coffee table book, perfect for dipping in and out off to learn new random knowledge that may one day prove useful in a pub quiz! If you’re a fan of the podcast I’d recommend the audiobook which I also own, it’s like an incredibly extended podcast!

Joe is a loving family man, happily married and delighted to be working part time as it allows him to spend more time with his son. One day he happens to see his wife’s car and thinks it would be nice to surprise her. Instead he gets into an unfortunate confrontation and his world begins to unravel.

I really enjoyed this novel, Joe was a really likeable central character and you couldn’t help but feel for him as the story developed. The plot was really fast moving and kept me gripped until the end, a great psychological thriller!

Vivian Miller is a CIA counterintelligence analyst – she’s good at what she does, and has developed an algorithm which will enable her department to identify Russian sleeper agents. When Vivian manages to access the computer of a Russian operative, it should be cause for celebration, but the discovery will threaten everything that she holds dear, and will put not only her own life in danger, but also those of her husband and four children!

A spy thriller written by a former CIA Analyst sounds right up my alley, what’s not to love right?! Unfortunately I really didn’t love it. Vivian makes a decision I just could not get on board with and from that point on as she managed to dig herself deeper and deeper I just couldn’t find enough empathy to actually care what happened as a result of her actions. It’s a shame that a book with so much potential just didn’t do it for me.

So that was today’s collection of mini reviews. A bit of a random collection of reviews I really should have posted long ago, two of the books I absolutely loved and two really just weren’t for me. If you’ve read any of them let me know in the comments!
